Institution of Agricultural Engineers
The Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) is the professional body for engineers, scientists, technologists and managers in agricultural and allied landbased industries, including forestry, food engineering and technology, amenity, renewable energy, horticulture and the environment.
Membership of the Institution provides a status that has won recognition throughout the world as an important career qualification. Members are classified into grades from Associate (including students) up to Fellow. Their activities cover a broad technical and administrative spectrum in engineering research and testing; design, development and manufacture; marketing and sales; teaching; training; consultancy and farming. As a nominated body of the Engineering Council UK, IAgrE is able to offer Professional registration with the Engineering Council as Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, Engineering Technician to suitably qualified members.
IAgrE is a founder constituent body of the Society for the Environment (SocEnv), an umbrella body for those professionals active in the field of sustainable development. Since 2004, through its constituent bodies, SocEnv has offered the professional qualification of Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv). Those working in the land based sector are welcome to contact IAgrE for further details of SocEnv and the CEnv qualification.
Activities include branch meetings, conferences and events, and technical groups meetings. These involve members with particular technical interests, including food engineering and technology, precision farming, forestry engineering, livestock engineering, machinery management, soil and water management, amenity and ecological engineering, renewable energy, vehicles, overseas development, agro-industrial products and pioneering technology. A Young Engineers' section is aimed at students and those embarking on a career in agricultural engineering. These activities provide a forum for technical updating and for meeting friends and colleagues within the industry.
Reports of the proceedings at national and branch meetings and other matters of technical and current interest are published four times a year in the Institution's Journal Landwards. Members are eligible for low-cost subscriptions to Biosystems Engineering (formerly JAER) through membership of the European Society of Agricultural Engineers.
The Institution is staffed by a Secretariat based at Silsoe in Bedfordshire, and is governed by an elected Council. It is a Company Limited by Guarantee. It is the UK member of EurAgEng, the European Society of Agricultural Engineers.
Membership
There are five main categories of membership: Student, Associate, Associate Member, Member and Fellow .
Student
This membership grade is for students following courses in scientific, engineering, agricultural engineering or other relevant technical subjects within the European Union. Student membership is sponsored by the Douglas Bomford Trust with no charge to the individual.
Associate - AIAgrE
This membership grade is for those who are actively involved or interested in the sector but who do not hold formal qualifications.
Associate Member - AMIAgrE
This membership grade is for those involved in the sector who hold technical qualifications acceptable to the IAgrE with at least 4 years of appropriate training/experience. A mature candidate route is available to candidates not holding formal academic qualifications. Associate Members holding appropriate academic qualifications may seek initial registration with the Engineering Council.
Member – MIAgrE
This grade is for those established in the sector who hold technical qualifications acceptable to the IAgrE. All members registered at the Final Stage with the Engineering Council as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) are eligible for membership in this grade. A mature candidate route is available for those not holding formal academic qualifications. Members may be registered with the Engineering Council as either EngTech, IEng, or CEng depending upon qualifications, expertise and experience. Members with appropriate qualifications and/or practical experience may apply for registration with the Society for the Environment through IAgrE.
Those holding senior positions in agricultural engineering, or related professions, will be eligible for entry into this grade by invitation.
Fellow – FIAgrE
This grade is for senior members of the sector holding technical qualifications acceptable to the IAgrE. A mature candidate route is available to candidates not holding formal academic qualifications. Those holding senior positions within the sector will be eligible for entry into this grade by invitation.
